Call for Proposals
for University of California, Berkeley, Faculty and Researchers
Grant period: October 1, 2025 through December 31, 2026
Application deadline: Tuesday, September 2, 2025, 5:00pm (PT)
AAPI Data invites applications from current UC Berkeley faculty and other UC Berkeley researchers with PI status for projects investigating the experiences, outcomes, and disparities faced by Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AA and NHPI) populations in the United States. Research can include examination of particular groups, as well as comparative analyses across groups, including comparisons to other racial and ethnic groups in the United States, and comparisons to Asian and Pacific Islander populations in other countries. AAPI Data is supported by funding from the State of California to better understand AA and NHPI populations in California, and the original or secondary analysis must include California-based communities in some meaningful manner.
The research is open with respect to disciplinary background. The methods and topics of study must be amenable to policy recommendations (including recommendations for greater public and private investments and changes to institutional practices) that ensure that AA and NHPI populations in California are better served. Typical projects would use social science research methods (including qualitative, quantitative, or mixed method approaches), though interdisciplinary humanities projects that shed greater light on historical developments and institutional practices in California are also welcome.
Grant Funding
Awards will be in the range of $25,000 to $200,000. We anticipate making awards in the $25,000-$50,000 range though will consider budgets up to $200K. The total amount of funding available is $250,000. Due to the competitive selection process, the final amount awarded may be less than the amount requested.
Funds can be used for salary support (including GSR funding), research travel, and/or other research-related expenses. Grant monies cannot be used for the purchase of computer equipment, books, and/or any other materials for personal use. Purchases of equipment and other materials for the project must be pre-approved and will be considered the property of the University of California, Berkeley.
The project period is 10/1/2025 through 12/31/2026. It will be possible to receive an extension on the project but only through 6/30/2026, so the selection committee will be carefully examining the feasibility of the proposed timeline.
Eligibility and Requirements
All research involving human subjects must be approved by the Office for the Protection of Human Subjects (OPHS) by the start of the funding period to ensure the protection of participants’ rights and welfare in the research process.
All UC Berkeley faculty members are eligible. UC Berkeley staff members with PI status are also eligible to apply for the faculty grant.
