Carlos Martinez, faculty affiliate of the Berkeley Center for Social Medicine, is co-editor of a new book, All This Safety Is Killing Us: Health Justice Beyond Prisons, Police, and Borders. This book examines the health harms caused by policing, incarceration, and border enforcement—systems ostensibly designed to keep us safe—through the lens of clinicians and activists working to build abolitionist alternatives. It features writings and artwork by incarcerated and formerly detained activists, alongside contributions from other scholars and community organizers.
