Bio/CV:

Brian TaeHyuk Keum, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor (Acting) in the School of Public Health at UC Berkeley, focusing on health and mental health disparities in Asian American communities through a culturally-informed, intersectional lens. He directs the Digital Equity & Anti-Oppression Lab. His work examines (a) the mental health and behavioral impacts of intersectional anti-Asian racism (e.g., gendered racism) and prevention/intervention efforts, (b) gendered racial socialization and culturally-informed risk and protective factors, including promotion of empowerment and flourishing health, (c) risky behaviors such as substance use and suicide among Asian Americans, and (d) disruption of anti-Blackness and the internalized model minority myth to foster cross-racial solidarity and community resilience.

His other major research explores the mental health and behavioral consequences of online oppression and violence, including online racism, heterosexism, and gendered racism. He also investigates disparities in clinical services for minoritized groups and develops culturally congruent psychological measures.

He has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles and received more than 40 grants and awards, including from the National Institute of Mental Health, California’s Tobacco-Related Disease Research Program, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. His work has earned numerous national honors, such as the 2022 Rising Star Award from the National Multicultural Conference Summit and early career awards from multiple divisions of the American Psychological Association (Divisions 17, 45, 49, 51). His work has been quoted by media outlets including The Washington Post, VICE, Kaiser Health, USA Today, ABC30, and NBC News.
