Supporting the Educational Experiences of Indigenous Students and Families: The Case of Maya Migrants from Yucatán in the San Francisco Bay Area

January 23, 2025

Indigenous students from Latin America are a growing but often overlooked population in U.S. public schools. Patricia Baquedano-López and Marisela Zamora have published a research brief in the ISSI working paper series. They review current research on Indigenous Maya students whose families originate from Yucatan in Mexico and draws on findings from a research project led by Patricia Baquedano-López, a faculty affiliate of the Center for Research on Social Change. The brief presents the most salient challenges that Indigenous students encounter in school and provides recommendations to develop and strengthen academic supports.
