A recent article by Travis J. Bristol, Center for Research on Social Change faculty affiliate, discusses how American families, students, and teachers are waiting for the presidential candidates to talk about the teacher workforce. Neither Trump nor Harris has spoken in any substantive way about preparing and recognizing great teachers. Specific policies, including higher pay for teachers and better teacher education, will be critical to strengthening the nation’s teacher workforce. A strong plan must include a federal grants program that incentivizes states to support teachers to pursue National Board Certification, the gold standard of teacher certification.
