The book cover of Violent Utopia. It contains a gray scale image of a silhouetted man walking under a concrete bridge.
A new book about the history and afterlife of the 1921 Tulsa race massacre by Jovan Scott Lewis, faculty affiliate of ISSI's Center for Ethnographic Research and member of ISSI's Faculty Advisory Committee, is available now from UC Press. Lewis places the massacre in a larger historical and social context of widespread patterns of anti-Black racism, segregation, and dispossession in Tulsa and beyond.
