October 27, 2023

In this Berkeley News interview, Asian American Research Center faculty affiliate Vernadette Vicuña Gonzalez explains why there are so many Filipinx living in Hawaii by analyzing the role of “long colonialism” in Filipinx immigration patterns. Gonzalez suggests that U.S. colonial history and labor extraction influenced the recruitment of Filipinx migrant workers for the sugar plantation economy in Hawaii. The interview also discusses how Filipinx residents have found belonging in Hawaii and what it means to be Filipinx and/or Filipinx American.
