The Stakes Explained

September 5, 2025

Faculty affiliates Sarah Song, Travis Bristol, and Cristina Mora are featured on a new podcast series called "The Stakes Explained" as they break down some of Trump’s executive orders. Sarah Song is a Professor of Law, Philosophy and Political Science and teaches courses in immigration and citizenship law and policy at UC Berkeley. She says that Trump suspending refugee admissions is not just about policy, it’s about belonging. Cristina Mora’s research focuses on immigration and racial and political attitudes in the United States. She says studying issues targeted by the Trump administration presents unique challenges. “I think it's very odd to have dedicated upwards of 20 years to this [research] and suddenly arrive at a place in which perhaps data doesn't matter anymore.” Education policy expert Travis Bristol discusses Executive Order 14190, which aims to end “radical indoctrination” in K-12 schools. But what is “radical indoctrination?” He says what’s radical is stopping teachers from talking about diversity, equity and inclusion in their classrooms.
