“Latinx is just a word that is reaching for a better way to capture the diversity within Latinx cultures and Latinx people,” said professor Laura E. Pérez. “If it ends up largely becoming a homogenizing marketing tool, people may find a new term.”In this Berkeley News interview, Laura E. Pérez, chair of the Latinx Research Chair (which is part of ISSI), explains how using the term 'Latinx' brings unknown Latinx experiences to light and captures the diversity within the culture and the people. "The use of the term Latinx is an opportunity to approach history with an open mind," Pérez asserts. She believes that the term promotes gender and multiethnic inclusivity.
