Travis Bristol and Tolani Britton, faculty affiliates of the Center for Research on Social Change, are among the co-authors of an article in Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis. "The Effects of Student–Teacher Ethnoracial Matching on Exclusionary Discipline for Asian American, Black, and Latinx Students: Evidence From New York City" expands on previous research that shows that having Black teachers decreases exclusionary discipline for Black students. Based on 10 years of data, they found that "student–teacher ethnoracial matching decreases the likelihood of suspension for Black and Latinx students." While the results were not statistically significant for Asian American students, they suggest that having more Asian American teachers could also be beneficial for Asian American students. The authors emphasize that a diverse teaching workforce benefits all students.
