Stacy Torres, faculty affiliate of the Center for Ethnographic Research, is the author of a new essay published in The Guardian. She reflects on her father's experiences immigrating from Chile in the wake of the 1973 coup, her current position as a professor who is increasingly concerned about academic freedom, and the parallels between the decimation of democracy in Chile then, with the Pinochet dictatorship's brutal violence against artists, writers, academics, and students, and growing intellectual suppression and authoritarianism in the U.S. now.
