Hector Castellanos (center) with We Drive Progress holds a sign that says 'Drivers Deserve the Wealth' outside DoorDash headquarters in San Francisco, along with fellow gig workers (rideshare and delivery drivers) demanding fair pay and employee rights.Catherine Fisk, Center for Research on Social Change faculty affiliate, is quoted in this KQED story discussing the decision of a California appeals court to uphold most of Proposition 22, which allows gig companies, such as Uber and Lyft, to classify their drivers as independent contractors. Fisk shares her disappointment with the appeals court decision, noting that this decision excluded a large group of workers from the minimum protections of the state's laws while also adding more responsibility on taxpayers.
