JD Vance’s dark vision of women and immigration

October 31, 2024

This Guardian article discusses a newly unearthed podcast from 2021 where Vance rants against feminism, immigrants, and Ilhan Omar. Sophie Bjork-James, Center for Right-Wing Studies Visiting Scholar, is quoted at length about JD Vance's misogyny. Bjork-James says, “Vance represents a new articulation of rightwing politics that is bridging the Christian right and a tech-influenced hypermasculine conservatism.” She explains these two groups share the view that women shouldn’t be in paid work. Rather, they should be at home, rearing children. “He appeals to evangelicals with the message that we find happiness by fulfilling traditional gender roles, which is a cornerstone of white evangelical Christianity. He also speaks to a misogynist trend emerging out of the tech world among people who would prefer not to talk about any kind of diversity at all.”
