Four faculty affiliates of ISSI have been honored as Hellman FellowsTolani BrittonMark FlemingBrandi Summers, and Sarah E. Vaughn. The Society of Hellman Fellows is an endowed program at all ten University of California campuses that provides research funding to promising assistant professors who show capacity for great distinction in their chosen fields. Tolani Britton will research educational pathways and success for formerly incarcerated students. Mark Fleming will investigate how the increasing integration of health care, social services, and criminal justice sectors is generating a new form of poverty governance in California. Brandi Summers will analyze the relationship between and function of race, space, urban infrastructure, and architecture, and Sarah E. Vaughn will examine how climate change is giving way to a new aesthetics of capitalism.
