Before Erdogan was declared the victor in the recent elections, the New York Times published this op-ed by Cihan Tuğal, faculty affiliate of the Berkeley Center for Right-Wing Studies, reflecting on the dire situation there. He noted, "In a deeply militarized region, the Turkish far right’s recourse to identity politics could have devastating repercussions, not least for Kurds, women, L.G.B.T.Q. communities and religious minorities."
