The Institute for the Study of Societal Issues and the Berkeley Food Institute are pleased to share a new report by ISSI Senior Researcher Robin Marsh and Caitlyn Wilt on the ecosystem of support for new and aspiring farmers in California: Building an Equitable Future with Generational Renewal in California Agriculture. Policy analysis at state and federal levels and field work with non-governmental support organizations and new farmers reveal a highly challenging environment for an equitable generational renewal in California agriculture. Nonetheless, the analysis shows that some young and beginning farmers are able to succeed with complex individualized networks of support, pointing to a set of recommendations for improving the overall ecosystem of support.
