Asian American Research Center student affiliate Maria “Mavi” Victória Riberio Ruy has recently co-authored an essay titled “The Choice of Liberdade: Brazilian Facets of Anti-Asian Racism and the Activism’s Response.” The essay provides a brief overview of Asian racial positionality in Brazil, wrapped up with an 2020 episode in which the “Oriental” element of the Liberdade district in São Paulo was being instrumentalized to erase the African memory and presence in the district. The Asian Brazilian movement, then, came together to oppose the project. The essay was published in Global Anti Asian Racism (Columbia 2024), edited by Jennifer Ho.
