March 18, 2025

ISSI Graduate Fellow Clara Pérez Medina was awarded the 2025 Clyde Woods Graduate Student Paper Award from the American Association of Geographers for their paper “Framing Displacement: Visual Geographies, Black Geographies, and the Crisis of Homelessness in Oakland.” The paper, first developed in ISSI's Graduate Fellows Program, is based on an analysis of 600 media images of Oakland from a framing and technical standpoint. Pérez Medina identifies three visual tropes that “amplify the disconnection of the accumulation of white spatial practices from the dispossession of peoples of color from spatial autonomy.”
