Sunnie Liu is an artist, organizer, and Public Interest Scholar at Berkeley Law. Born in rural China but raised in Houston, Texas as the child of Chinatown workers, Sunnie is committed to movements at the intersection of racial and economic justice. Sunnie graduated with degrees in Studio Art and History from Yale University.
Before law school, Sunnie advocated to end solitary confinement, reform bail, and improve public defense from Mississippi to Chicago. Sunnie also organized against the displacement of Manhattan’s Chinatown and co-founded Xin Sheng | 心声 Project, a nonprofit combatting disinformation plaguing the Chinese diaspora. Sunnie’s award-winning political research was published in the book “The Politics of the Multiracial Right” (NYU Press, 2026).
Working across sculpture, installation, and lens-based practices, Sunnie has exhibited art across the US. Sunnie has also been an artist-in-residence with the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, Chautauqua Institution, Foundation House, Pocoapoco, and the Bandung Residency for Black-Asian solidarity.
