Bio/CV:

Faatimah Solomon is a student at the UC Berkeley-UC San Francisco Joint Medical Program, which combines a medical degree with a master’s in Health and Medical Sciences. For the master’s component of her training, Faatimah is researching the perspectives and experiences of birth and faith among Black Muslim birthing communities. Drawing from Black feminist and Islamic reproductive justice frameworks, this project examines themes that emerge from the birth stories of thirty-two Black Muslims. This study aims to understand lived experiences of childbirth, examine how race and faith inform decision-making, and identify gaps in accessing faith- and culturally-aligned care. It further seeks to identify support systems, resources, and practices that Black Muslim birthing individuals rely on, and to offer recommendations for models of care that meet their medical, social, and spiritual needs. Faatimah’s research interests broadly include health equity, sexual and reproductive health, and decolonizing global health.
