Black Visual Geographies and the Crisis of Homelessness in Oakland

ISSI graduate student and Berkeley Geography PhD candidate Clara Pérez Medina recently published a paper, "Framing Displacement, Forcing Perspective: Black Visual Geographies and the Crisis of Homelessness in Oakland," in Antipode: A Radical Journal of Geography. "In this paper I argue that housing insecurity in Oakland, blackness, and the attempts of the city's powerful elite to regulate both take up visual forms in which racialized narratives of who belongs where, when, and how are made into visual arguments with deadly consequences."
